Welcome to Johns Island

A fast-growing rural town with quiet neighborhoods and lots of outdoor recreation.

Until the early 2000s, Johns Island was a quiet community of farms and small neighborhoods. As Charleston and James Island continued to grow, more and more people began looking across the Stono River for a place on Johns Island. Since then, the area has been quickly and continuously growing, with new homes and businesses popping up regularly. The island is the second largest on the East Coast and the largest in South Carolina, encompassing roughly 84 square miles and bounded by the Stono River, the Wadmalaw River, and the Kiawah River. The primary thoroughfare through the island is Maybank Highway (Rt. 700), along which most of the restaurants, bars, and shops are found.

Johns Island has a mix of older homes built before 2000 and many new communities. Some communities offer gated access and luxury amenities like private docks, pools, and fitness centers. The architectural styles are primarily Low Country Cottage Style and elevated Coastal homes, all in keeping with the rural charm of the area. Most older homes are on rather large lots, many of which are proper farms or farmettes. Those expansive green spaces provide excellent habitat for the many species of wildlife that thrive on the island. With much of the land protected, the extensive subdivision is unlikely, so the area's rural appeal will not be spoiled by over-development.

Families love Johns Island for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and easy access to all of the surrounding rivers for fishing and recreation. Johns Island also has many beautiful parks and is close to the fabulous beach on Kiawah Island. Johns Island is perfect for families that enjoy the privacy and serenity of a rural community but also desire many outdoor recreation opportunities.

Local Lifestyle

Johns Island is a beautiful rural community and a great place to raise a family. The quietness of the tree-lined streets is occasionally broken by the rhythmic steps of joggers or the hum of a passing car. Residents love spending time on the rivers that surround the island. They enjoy fishing, crabbing, shrimping, and cruising along, admiring the area's unspoiled beauty.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Johns Island is growing quickly, and with that growth, new shops and restaurants are continually being added. The Wild Olive is an Italian restaurant with a chic and welcoming dining area. They specialize in artisanal Italian cuisine and offer an excellent wine list. In the heart of the island is a comfortable and family-friendly restaurant called The Royal Tern. The restaurant is known for its fantastic fresh local seafood, steaks, and raw bar.

The Tattooed Moose fits the bill for something a tad more hip and funky. The specialties here are duck club sandwiches and fantastic live music. The Estuary Beans & Barley is a unique establishment, part coffee shop, part bakery, part craft beer brewery, part cafe. The Estuary hosts special events regularly and even allows patrons to bring their “well-behaved” canine friends.

Things to Do

Johns Island offers its residents easy access to a host of outdoor recreational activities. John’s Island Country Park Mullet Hall provides residents with many miles of shaded trails for hiking, trail rides, and running. The park has an equestrian center that hosts competitive events throughout the year. The park also has disc golf and archery facilities and is a very popular wedding venue. Another fantastic local park is the Stono River County Park. This park has hiking trails, a marsh boardwalk, beautiful river views, and picnic areas.

The Charleston Aqua Park at Trophy Lakes is a modern aquatic playground and ropes course that offers fun for the whole family. The most cherished local landmark is the majestic Angel Oak Tree. This magnificent sprawling oak is estimated to be at least 400-500 years old. Its beautiful sprawling moss-draped limbs stretch to a circumference of almost 30 feet, and the tree’s height is nearly 67 feet.
